Ryan Dempster has quietly been having a great season for the Cubs. He has had only one opponent score more than 3 runs against him all season, and that was when he gave up 4 runs to the Reds on April 15th. Dempster has allowed only 29 hits in 43 innings of work, while holding opponents to a low .172 BAA on the season. Now he gets to find out just how good he is, by facing an Arizona team that leads the Majors with 201 runs scored. Max Scherzer gets his 2nd Major League start for the Diamondbacks. Scherzer struggled against Philadelphia on Monday. He allowed 8 hits and 5 earned runs against the Phillies and only lasted 4 innings before being pulled out of the game. Scherzer had shown promise by striking out 7 in four innings of relief against the Astros earlier in the season. He will be a good pitcher after he gains some starting experience, but Wrigley Field is not where he needs to start his 2nd MLB game, especially if the wind is blowing out.

The line is a little higher than I would like it to be for this game, but I really like this matchup tonight. So we will play it, but reduce the units played to only 2 units. Both these teams are coming off loses, but the Dodgers have won 8 of their last 10 and are 11-6 at home this season. They start Derek Lowe who is coming off his worst start of the season against the Rockies, where he gave up 5 earned runs and 6 hits in 5 innings of work. He has pitched very well in his career against the Astros, with a 2.23 Era and .229 Baa lifetime against them. Brian Moehler gets the start for the injured Wandy Rodriguez. Moehler has given up 11 hits and 6 earned runs in 7 innings of work this season. He has also had no success against the Dodgers in his career, giving up 33 hits and 16 earned runs in 22 innings against them lifetime. Look for Lowe to get back on track and get many ground ball outs against the Houston lineup tonight.

Walking 25 batters in 36 innings has caused his whip to ease up to 1.77 on the season, but he still has a decent 4.25 era which basically tells us that he has been pitching out of jams. He does seem to pitch better at home, where he has allowed 14 hits and 5 earned runs in 17 innings of work. He has also fared well against the Nationals in his career, by holding them to a low.209 BAA (batting average against). The Nationals send John Lannan to face the red hot Astros. Lannan is coming off his worst start of the season, by allowing 6 hits and 5 earned runs in only 3 innings of work against the Pirates. That makes the second time in his last 5 starts that he has been hit hard. Now he gets to try his luck against an Astros team that has won 8 straight home games, and will be looking to make it 9 in a row to complete the sweep of the Nationals.

Duke has allowed 48 hits in 35 innings of work this season, and has especially struggled in his last 3 appearances. Duke will be facing a San Francisco team that has struggled at times this season, but has shown promise against left handed starters, especially over their last 5 games, hitting .344 against them. The Giants have won 5 straight games that Sanhcez has started and should make it 6 in a row after tonight.

It's no secret that San Diego has had trouble scoring runs against quality starting pitchers. The question is , is Philadelphia's Adam Eaton a quality pitcher? At this point in the season, probably not, as he as only made it to the 6th inning in 3 of his 5 starts. What is surprising is that Phillies Manager Charlie Manual pulled him from his last start after only 3 innings of work. Eaton was staked to a 6-0 lead and lost his focus allowing 3 runs in 3 innings, at which point Manual yanked him in frustration. Eaton will be opposed by Randy Wolf of the Padres, who has had issues of his own in his last couple of starts. Wolf allowed 9 runs in 10 innings of work in his last 2 games, with both games coming against a rejuvenated Arizona offense. Now he gets to face a Philadelphia offense that can also put runs up in a hurry. One thing is for sure, Adam Eaton will be prepared and ready for this game, and he should have success against a Padre club that has hit a measly .177 against righties in their last 5 games.
